Introduction
In moments of hardship, true faith
is revealed…
Not every battle is fought with
weapons—some are fought within the soul… between truth and excuses, between
comfort and duty.
The story of the three who were left
behind is not just a historical incident.
It is a powerful lesson in honesty, repentance, and resilience under pressure.
It is the story of three sincere
believers… who made a mistake—
but chose truth over escape… and rose because of it.
The Story
In a time of intense heat, when the الأرض burned under the sun and fruits had
ripened—tempting people to stay—Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
called the المسلمين to march toward the
Battle of Tabuk.
It was a long, difficult journey… known
as the Hour of Hardship.
Among those who remained behind were
three sincere companions:
Ka'b ibn Malik, Hilal ibn Umayyah, and Murarah ibn Al-Rabi'.
They were not hypocrites… nor weak
in faith…
but they made a fatal mistake: they delayed.
Ka'b ibn Malik was strong, capable,
and well-prepared.
He kept telling himself:
“I will prepare tomorrow…”
But tomorrow came… and went…
until the army had already departed.
Hilal and Murarah fell into the same
trap… hesitation… delay…
until they too were left behind.
At first, the weight of their
decision did not fully hit them…
But as days passed, reality began to
sink in.
Ka'b would walk through the streets
of Madinah…
but he saw no one like himself—
Only:
a known hypocrite
or someone with a genuine excuse
And he realized…
he was in serious trouble.
Hilal and Murarah could not even
face the الناس…
They remained in their homes…
weeping…
broken…
overwhelmed with regret.
When the Prophet ﷺ returned from Tabuk,
those who had stayed behind came forward with excuses…
They lied… swore oaths… fabricated
reasons…
And the Prophet accepted their
outward claims, leaving their reality to Allah.
Then came the turn of the three.
Ka'b stood before the Prophet ﷺ…
He knew he could lie and escape…
But he chose truth.
“O Messenger of Allah… I had no
excuse.”
The Prophet replied:
“As for this one, he has spoken the
truth.
Stand aside until Allah judges your case.”
Then came Hilal… and Murarah…
They too spoke nothing but the
truth.
No lies… no excuses…
They chose the hardest path… but the
most sincere one.
Then the real test began.
The Prophet ﷺ ordered the entire community to boycott them.
Suddenly…
No one spoke to them…
No one returned their greetings…
Faces turned away…
They became strangers in their own
city.
Ka'b was the strongest among them…
He continued to go out… pray with
the Muslims… walk in the market…
He would greet people… but no one
responded…
He would look at the Prophet ﷺ… but the Prophet turned away…
He said:
“The earth felt tight upon me
despite its vastness… and my own soul felt tight upon me…”
As for Hilal and Murarah…
They could not تحمل it…
They remained inside their homes…
crying day and night…
A deep, silent pain consumed them.
Days passed…
10… 20… 30…
The pain only grew heavier.
In the midst of this trial… another
test came to Ka'b…
A letter from the king of Ghassan:
“We have heard your companion has
abandoned you…
Come to us, and we will honor you.”
It was a tempting escape…
But Ka'b recognized it as a test.
“This too is part of the trial…”
And he burned the letter
immediately.
After forty days…
A new command came:
They must separate from their wives.
The pain deepened…
Ka'b sent his wife to her family…
As for Hilal—he was an elderly, weak
man…
His wife sought permission to remain
and serve him…
The Prophet ﷺ allowed it—
but without marital closeness.
The test intensified…
Heavy… silent… endless days…
Until fifty nights had passed.
On the morning of the fiftieth day…
Ka'b was sitting on the roof of his
house…
The world had closed in on him…
Then suddenly…
A voice called out from afar:
“O Ka'b ibn Malik… rejoice!”
His heart froze…
Then he fell سجودًا…
He knew… relief had come.
Allah had accepted their repentance.
Forgiveness descended from the
heavens…
They were restored—not just as
before…
but stronger… purer… closer to Allah.
Ka'b rushed to the Prophet ﷺ…
People were congratulating him…
He entered and saw the Prophet
smiling, his face shining with joy…
He said:
“Rejoice with the best day you have
had since your mother gave birth to you.”
This was the true victory…
Not just forgiveness…
But that their honesty was recorded
forever…
And that one moment of truth…
saved them… elevated them… and changed their destiny.
