Introduction
Not every bright beginning ends in
light…
Some people walk the path of truth,
carry knowledge, and rise above others—only to fall in the end. Not because
they didn’t know, but because they chose otherwise.
This is not just the story of a man
who went astray…
It is the story of a man who knew the truth, lived by it for a time, then
abandoned it.
Many scholars mention his name as
Balaam (Bal‘am) son of Ba‘ura—a man who was given knowledge, yet turned away
from it.
The Story
In the time of Prophet Moses (peace
be upon him), there lived a man known among people for his knowledge and
devotion.
According to some narrations, his
name was Balaam son of Ba‘ura. He was not an ordinary man—he was seen as a scholar,
someone whose prayers were answered, and someone people trusted deeply.
He lived honored… respected… and
spiritually elevated.
But the greatest test of his life
was yet to come.
When Prophet Moses (peace be upon
him) approached a land inhabited by people who feared his arrival, anxiety
spread among them.
They felt threatened… uncertain…
afraid of losing what they had.
So they gathered and said:
“There is only one man who can help us… a man whose supplication is answered.”
They went to Balaam and said:
“O Balaam, Moses has come with his people, and we fear he may drive us out of
our land. Pray to God against him!”
Silence filled the moment.
It was not a simple request… it was a dangerous one.
According to narrations, Balaam
hesitated.
How could he pray against a prophet
he knew was upon the truth?
How could he use what God had given him for something wrong?
He initially refused.
But they didn’t stop…
They returned again and again—offering incentives, applying pressure, appealing
to his desires.
With every attempt… something inside
him weakened.
And this is how downfall begins—
Not in one moment, but through small compromises.
Over time, Balaam began to incline
toward them.
Eventually, he made a decision…
A decision that would change everything.
He set out, determined to do what
they asked.
Along the way, narrations mention
that he encountered signs and moments that should have made him reconsider…
Warnings… reminders… chances to turn back.
But his heart had already shifted.
He was no longer listening to truth
the same way.
Desire had become louder.
And here, the Qur’anic meaning
becomes clear:
He inclined toward the earth and followed his desires.
Balaam reached the place where he
intended to make his supplication.
He raised his hands—the same hands
once raised in sincere devotion.
But this time… something was
different.
Narrations mention that things did
not go as he intended.
His supplication did not align with his purpose.
It was as if something within him
had already collapsed.
At that moment, he was no longer
just making a mistake…
He was stripping himself away from the truth he once carried.
As described in the Qur’an:
“He detached himself from it.”
His fall was not sudden…
It was the result of a path filled with compromises.
From a man of knowledge…
to a follower of desire.
From someone close to guidance…
to someone led astray.
Until he became an example—not of
righteousness, but of failure.
God describes him with a powerful
image:
“like a dog that pants whether driven away or left alone.”
Meaning:
He no longer benefited from knowledge…
nor responded to guidance.
There was no dramatic ending…
No loud conclusion…
Just a quiet, devastating loss.
A man who could have been elevated
by knowledge…
chose instead to fall because of it.
He knew the path…
but chose to leave it.
Lessons Learned
1. Knowledge alone is not enough
What matters is acting upon it, not
just possessing it.
2. The most dangerous moment is
knowing the truth and abandoning it
This is a conscious loss, not
ignorance.
3. Downfall begins with small
compromises
Major failure starts with minor
steps.
4. Worldly desires can corrupt even
the knowledgeable
Attachment to dunya can distort
judgment.
5. A corrupted heart no longer
responds to guidance
Advice becomes ineffective when the
heart hardens.
6. Social pressure can lead to
destructive choices
Standing for truth requires
strength.
7. Guidance requires consistency and
protection
It is not a one-time achievement.
8. Following desires leads to
misguidance
Desire often disguises falsehood as
truth.
9. Status does not protect from سقوط
Even respected people can fall.
10. The end matters more than the
beginning
A strong start does not guarantee a
good ending.

A Last Word
Dear young people…
You are living in a time where
choices are many, and truth is often surrounded by noise. Staying on the right
path today requires more strength than ever.
This story is not about the past…
It is about a pattern that repeats itself.
You may not be asked to openly
oppose the truth…
But you will be asked to compromise:
To stay silent…
To go along…
To choose what is easy instead of what is right.
And that’s where the real test
begins.
The danger is not in making
mistakes…
The real danger is knowing what’s right—and choosing otherwise.
Remember:
Strength is not in knowledge alone,
but in standing by it
Your heart is your greatest
asset—protect it
Every small step in the wrong
direction matters
Do not be deceived by a strong
beginning…
What truly matters is how you continue—and how you end.
Always ask yourself:
Am I following the truth… or just my desires?
And never forget:
Hearts change…
And staying firm is a blessing.
So always ask God to keep you
steadfast.
In the end…
You choose your path.
But every path has an ending—
So choose one that is worthy of you.
