Introduction
Not every question is a sign of
doubt. Sometimes a question comes from a heart that already believes but longs
for deeper understanding. The Qur’an tells stories not only to inform us of
what happened in the past, but to awaken our minds and hearts. Through these
stories we see how human nature behaves when faced with divine
commands—sometimes with faith and submission, and sometimes with hesitation and
unnecessary complication.
Among the remarkable stories of the
Children of Israel is the story of the cow. It is a story that begins with a
mysterious murder, passes through a series of stubborn questions, and ends with
a miracle that reveals the truth. Yet behind the events lies a powerful lesson
about obedience, sincerity, and the danger of making simple commands
unnecessarily difficult.
The Story
Long ago, during the time of Prophet
Moses, a wealthy old man lived among the Children of Israel. He had great
wealth but no children. His closest relatives were his nephews, who were poor
and expected to inherit his fortune one day.
As time passed and the old man
continued to live, greed began to grow in the hearts of some of his relatives.
Satan whispered evil thoughts to them, and one of the nephews allowed envy and
greed to take control of him. He decided to commit a terrible crime.
One night, he lured his uncle out of
the house under a false excuse and murdered him. Then he secretly carried the
body and left it near another town so that suspicion would fall on someone
else. The next morning he pretended to search for his uncle, crying and
accusing the people of the nearby town.
The people denied the accusation and
swore that they had nothing to do with the murder. Soon the dispute grew, and
the case was brought before Prophet Moses.
The relatives of the murdered man
demanded justice. The accused people insisted on their innocence. Confusion
spread among the people, and no one knew who the real killer was.
At that moment, God revealed
guidance to Moses.
The Qur’an describes the moment:
“And when Moses said to his people,
‘Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.’ They said, ‘Are you mocking
us?’ He said, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.’”
(Qur’an 2:67)
The people were surprised. They had
come asking about a murder, yet Moses told them that God commanded them to
slaughter a cow. Instead of trusting the command, they responded with suspicion
and sarcasm.
Moses firmly replied that he would
never mock them and that he sought refuge in God from ignorance.
If they had simply obeyed and
slaughtered any cow, the command would have been fulfilled. But their habit of
questioning and hesitation made things more complicated.
They asked Moses:
“Call upon your Lord to make clear
to us what kind of cow it is.”
(Qur’an 2:68)
Moses answered:
“He says it is a cow neither old nor
young, but of middle age. So do what you are commanded.”
(Qur’an 2:68)
Yet they continued questioning.
They asked about its color.
Moses replied:
“It is a bright yellow cow, pleasing
to those who look at it.”
(Qur’an 2:69)
Still they were not satisfied. They
kept asking for more details until the description became extremely specific.
Finally Moses told them:
“It is a cow not trained to plow the
land nor water the fields, sound and without any mark on it.”
(Qur’an 2:71)
Only then did they say:
“Now you have brought the truth.”
(Qur’an 2:71)
After a long search they finally
found such a cow, owned by a young man known for his extraordinary kindness to
his father. Because of his devotion and respect toward his parent, God had
blessed him with this special cow.
The Children of Israel had to pay a
very high price to purchase it.
At last they slaughtered the cow,
although the Qur’an tells us:
“They slaughtered it, though they
almost did not do it.”
(Qur’an 2:71)
Then came the miracle.
God commanded them to strike the
murdered man with a piece of the cow.
“So We said, ‘Strike him with part
of it.’ Thus does Allah bring the dead to life and shows you His signs so that
you may understand.”
(Qur’an 2:73)
When they struck the body, the dead
man came back to life for a brief moment. The people stood in shock as he spoke
and revealed the truth:
His own nephew had killed him.
With the truth exposed, the murderer
was punished, and the hidden crime that had caused so much confusion was
finally revealed.
Through this astonishing event, God
showed the people a sign of His power—the One who can bring the dead back to
life and reveal what people try to hide.

A Final Word
Dear young people,
The story of the Cow teaches us that
life becomes difficult when we complicate what God has made simple. Faith is
not about endless excuses or hesitation. It is about trust, sincerity, and
courage to do what is right.
Greed destroyed a family and led a
young man to commit a terrible crime. But kindness to a parent raised another
young man to honor and blessing.
Your choices shape your future.
Choose honesty over deception, respect over arrogance, and obedience to God
over the whispers of greed and temptation.
And always remember: even when the
truth seems hidden, God sees everything—and sooner or later, the truth will
appear.
