Introduction
Throughout history, people have
often asked God for signs that would strengthen their faith and reassure their
hearts. Sometimes, believers long to witness a miracle with their own eyes so
that their certainty becomes even stronger.
During the time of Prophet Jesus (ʿIsa) عليه
السلام, he had devoted followers known as the disciples. They believed
in him and supported his message, yet they desired a great sign from
God—something extraordinary that would fill their hearts with complete reassurance.
One day, they asked Jesus for a
miracle unlike anything they had seen before: a table of food descending from
the sky. Their request would lead to one of the most remarkable stories
mentioned in the Qur’an—a story about faith, blessings, gratitude, and the
serious consequences of disbelief after witnessing clear signs.
The Story of the Table from Heaven
One day, the disciples gathered
around Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). They spoke about the power of God and
the miracles they had already witnessed. Although they believed in him, their
hearts longed for a great sign that they could see with their own eyes.
Then they asked him a remarkable
question:
“When the disciples said, ‘O Jesus,
son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a table spread with food from
heaven?’”
(Qur’an 5:112)
Their request was not meant to deny
the power of God, but rather to strengthen their faith and bring peace to their
hearts. However, Jesus was concerned about the seriousness of asking for such a
miracle. He gently warned them:
“Fear Allah, if you are truly
believers.”
(Qur’an 5:112)
He knew that when great miracles
appear, the responsibility of those who witness them becomes even greater.
But the disciples explained their
intention. They said:
“We wish to eat from it so that our
hearts may be reassured, to know that you have told us the truth, and to be
among those who witness it.”
(Qur’an 5:113)
They wanted nourishment, certainty
in their hearts, and a sign that would confirm the truth of Jesus’ message.
Seeing their sincerity, Jesus turned
to God in humble prayer. He purified himself, stood in devotion, and raised his
hands toward the sky. With deep humility he prayed:
“O Allah, our Lord, send down to us
a table spread with food from heaven so that it may be a festival for the first
and the last of us and a sign from You. Provide for us, for You are the Best of
Providers.”
(Qur’an 5:114)
It was a beautiful prayer filled
with hope, faith, and submission.
Then the answer came from the
heavens—a response that carried both mercy and a serious warning.
Allah said: “Indeed, I will send it
down to you. But whoever disbelieves afterward, I will punish him with a
punishment unlike any I have given to anyone among the worlds.”
(Qur’an 5:115)
God accepted the prayer, but He warned
them clearly: whoever rejected the truth after witnessing such a miracle would
face a severe punishment.
The people looked toward the sky
with anticipation.
Suddenly, something extraordinary
appeared. A cloud formed above them, and from within it a magnificent table
slowly descended from the heavens. It was surrounded by angels until it gently
rested before them.
A beautiful fragrance spread through
the air—something they had never smelled before.
Jesus and the disciples immediately
fell to the ground in gratitude, praising God for His blessing.
The table was covered with a cloth.
Jesus said:
“Who among you will uncover the
table and mention the name of God over it?”
The disciples replied:
“O Spirit of God and His Word, you
are the most worthy to do so.”
So Jesus performed ablution and
prayed again. Then he sat beside the table and said:
“In the name of Allah, the Best of
Providers.”
He lifted the cloth.
What they saw filled them with
amazement.
On the table was a large roasted
fish without bones, dripping with rich oil. Around it were various vegetables,
and beside it were five loaves of bread. On some loaves there were olives, and
on others different fruits.
The people stared in wonder.
One of them asked:
“O Jesus, is this food from the food
of this world or from the food of Paradise?”
Jesus replied:
“It is neither from the food of this
world nor from the food of Paradise. It is something that Allah created by His
power.”
Then he said to them:
“Eat in the name of Allah, and thank
Him for His blessings.”
However, Jesus himself refused to
begin eating. He said:
“Those who asked for it should eat
first.”
Some of the disciples hesitated,
fearing that the miracle might be a test. Seeing this, Jesus invited the poor
and the sick and said:
“Come and eat from the provision of
Allah.”
The poor and the needy came forward
and began to eat from the blessed table. It is said that more than a thousand
people ate from it, and every one of them was satisfied—yet the food did not
decrease.
Many sick people who ate from the
table were healed by the permission of God, and many poor people felt their
hearts filled with gratitude and hope.
But sadly, not everyone remained
faithful to the blessing. Some people betrayed the command they were given.
They secretly stored food from the table even though they had been forbidden to
do so. Others began to doubt the miracle and questioned what they had seen.
After witnessing such a clear sign,
their disbelief was a grave matter.
And so the story of the table from
heaven became a powerful reminder of God’s mercy—and the serious consequences
of denying the truth after seeing it clearly.

The story of the table from heaven
reminds us of a powerful truth: Allah is قادر
on all things and can provide in ways beyond imagination. Yet every blessing
carries responsibility.
